Best PSP Games of All Time
Published 2026-10-07
The PSP library is smaller than the DS's, but it is unusually dense with games that felt like console releases. Sony's handheld got full-length action games, deep role-playing games and a handful of experiments that never appeared anywhere else.
These 20 picks are grouped by genre rather than ranked, because the right starting point depends on what you like. Every one runs well in an emulator such as PPSSPP; if you have not set one up yet, read our guide to playing PSP games on Android first.
Action and adventure
God of War: Chains of Olympus
Ready at Dawn's prequel follows Kratos during his years of service to the gods. It kept the series' scale and combat intact on a handheld, and it is still the game people name first when asked what the PSP could do.
God of War: Ghost of Sparta
A bigger, better-looking follow-up that sends Kratos looking for his brother Deimos. If you only play one God of War on PSP, many players pick this one for its tighter combat and longer campaign.
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
A return to Liberty City built for the handheld, with a full open world and a story that fills in the background of the city seen in GTA III.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories
Set in 1984 and developed by Rockstar Leeds, it adds an empire-building mechanic and a neon-lit Vice City that is arguably the better of the two handheld GTAs.
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
A 1974 Costa Rica story with base-building and four-player co-op. It plays like a console Metal Gear squeezed onto the PSP, and its co-op boss fights are a highlight.
Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles
A remake of Rondo of Blood with new 3D visuals, plus the original game and the legendary Symphony of the Night included as an unlockable extra.
Daxter
A platformer starring Jak's sidekick, built by Ready at Dawn. It is bright, funny and a strong pick for players who prefer a lighter game.
Role-playing and strategy
Persona 3 Portable
Atlus reworked the game for handheld play, replacing the 3D overworld with a menu-driven one and adding a playable female protagonist. A dense mix of school-life simulation and dungeon crawling.
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions
An enhanced version of the classic tactical RPG with a new translation, new jobs and animated cutscenes. Deep, difficult and still among the best strategy games on any handheld.
Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
A remake of the 1995 game, brought back by its original creator Yasumi Matsuno. Branching story paths and a flexible class system reward repeat playthroughs.
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
A prequel following Zack Fair, with real-time combat and a story that makes the original Final Fantasy VII hit harder.
Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
Three playable heroes, Terra, Ventus and Aqua, tell overlapping stories that set up the first Kingdom Hearts. Among the best-looking games on the system.
Dissidia Final Fantasy
Heroes and villains from the first ten Final Fantasy games fight in arena battles. A fan-service crossover that has real depth in its equipment and levelling systems.
Jeanne d'Arc
Level-5's tactical RPG loosely inspired by Joan of Arc, with a dark fantasy setting and a polished story. It is often overlooked, which makes it a good discovery.
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
A huge hunting game with an enormous amount of content and ad hoc multiplayer. It is slow to start, but it is the game that made Monster Hunter a phenomenon in Japan.
Games you can only get on PSP
Patapon
A rhythm-strategy game where you command an army by playing drum beats. It looks like a simple side-scroller and is far more tactical than it appears.
LocoRoco 2
You tilt the world with the shoulder buttons so a blob of colourful creatures rolls through each level. Gentle, cheerful and very much a handheld original.
Tekken: Dark Resurrection
A faithful handheld port of the arcade game, with the full roster and online-era polish. One of the strongest fighting games on the system.
Burnout Legends
Criterion's arcade racer, with Crash mode and a campaign built from the series' best tracks. It captures the speed of the console games.
How to pick your first PSP game
If you want something that shows off the hardware, start with Chains of Olympus. If you prefer a long role-playing game, go for Persona 3 Portable or Final Fantasy Tactics. For something light that works in short sessions, try Patapon or LocoRoco 2.
